Having suffered a submission defeat at Bellator 292, at the hands of a younger Usman Nurmagomedov, Benson declared that he would retire if he lost in his last 4 fights. With that, he left his gloves on the cage floor, proverbially hanging his gloves up and finishing his MMA career with a record of 30 wins and 12 losses, with no draws (rare for a lightweight!).

Benson Henderson: A Career Retrospective
Benson Henderson is one of the most accomplished and respected fighters in mixed martial arts history. He has won world titles in two major promotions, UFC and WEC, and has competed against some of the best lightweights of his generation. He has also shown remarkable durability and longevity, fighting for over 15 years and never being knocked out or submitted.
Henderson began his MMA career in 2006, fighting mostly in regional promotions in his home state of Arizona. He made his WEC debut in 2009, defeating Anthony Njokuani by unanimous decision. He then went on to win four more fights in a row, including a submission victory over Donald Cerrone to capture the interim WEC lightweight title. He unified the title by defeating Jamie Varner by guillotine choke in 2010.
Henderson defended his WEC title twice more, against Cerrone again and Shane Roller, before the promotion merged with UFC. He made his UFC debut in 2011, defeating Mark Bocek by unanimous decision. He then earned a title shot by defeating Jim Miller and Clay Guida, both by unanimous decision.
In 2012, Henderson faced Frankie Edgar for the UFC lightweight title at UFC 144. In a close and controversial fight, Henderson edged out Edgar by unanimous decision to become the new champion. He defended his title three times that year, against Edgar again (by split decision), Nate Diaz (by unanimous decision), and Gilbert Melendez (by split decision).
In 2013, Henderson lost his title to Anthony Pettis by armbar submission at UFC 164. This was a rematch of their WEC fight in 2010, where Pettis defeated Henderson by unanimous decision with a famous “Showtime kick” in the final round.
Henderson bounced back from his loss with two wins over Josh Thomson (by split decision) and Rustam Khabilov (by rear-naked choke). He then moved up to welterweight for two fights, defeating Brandon Thatch (by rear-naked choke) and Jorge Masvidal (by split decision).
In 2016, Henderson signed with Bellator MMA after becoming a free agent. He made his Bellator debut against Andrey Koreshkov for the welterweight title but lost by unanimous decision. He then dropped back to lightweight and faced Michael Chandler for the title but lost by split decision.
Henderson rebounded with four consecutive wins over Roger Huerta (by guillotine choke), Saad Awad (by unanimous decision), Adam Piccolotti (by split decision), and Myles Jury (by unanimous decision). These wins earned him another shot at the lightweight title against Patricio Freire but he lost by guillotine choke.
In 2023, Henderson entered the Bellator Lightweight Grand Prix as one of eight participants. He faced Usman Nurmagomedov in the quarterfinals at Bellator 292 but lost by rear-naked choke after being caught by a kick that sent both men to the mat.
After this loss, Henderson announced his retirement from MMA at age 391. He received an ovation from the crowd and praise from fellow fighters on social media2. He ended his career with a record of 28-11-0.
Benson Henderson will be remembered as one of the greatest lightweights of all time and a true warrior who always gave his best inside the cage.

UFC vs Bellator
Benson Henderson is one of the most decorated fighters in MMA history, having won world titles in both UFC and WEC. He also had a long and successful run in Bellator MMA, where he fought for three different titles and reached the quarterfinals of the Lightweight Grand Prix. How does his career compare between UFC and Bellator?
In UFC, Henderson had a record of 11-3-0. He won the lightweight title by defeating Frankie Edgar at UFC 144 and defended it three times against Edgar (again), Nate Diaz, and Gilbert Melendez. He lost the title to Anthony Pettis at UFC 164 by armbar submission. He then won two more fights at lightweight against Josh Thomson and Rustam Khabilov before moving up to welterweight for two fights, where he defeated Brandon Thatch and Jorge Masvidal.
In Bellator, Henderson had a record of 7-7-0. He challenged for the welterweight title in his debut but lost to Andrey Koreshkov by unanimous decision. He then dropped back to lightweight and challenged for the title twice more but lost both times, first to Michael Chandler by split decision and then to Patricio Freire by guillotine choke. He also entered the Lightweight Grand Prix but lost in the quarterfinals to Usman Nurmagomedov by triangle choke submission.
Henderson’s best wins in Bellator were over Roger Huerta (by guillotine choke), Saad Awad (by unanimous decision), Adam Piccolotti (by split decision), Myles Jury (by unanimous decision), and Peter Queally (by unanimous decision).
Henderson’s career statistics show that he was more dominant in UFC than in Bellator. In UFC, he had a higher win percentage (78% vs 50%), more finishes (5 vs 2), more title defenses (3 vs 0), and fewer losses (3 vs 7). He also faced tougher competition in UFC, as he fought against some of the best lightweights of his era.
However, Henderson’s career in Bellator should not be overlooked or dismissed. He showed great courage and ambition by fighting for three different titles and competing against some of the best fighters in Bellator’s roster. He also displayed remarkable durability and longevity, as he fought until age 39 without ever being knocked out or submitted.
Benson Henderson will be remembered as one of the greatest lightweights of all time and a legend of both UFC and Bellator.
